When You Know He Knows

Noah loves being outside. Give him a shady spot in the backyard and he is happy for hours. He digs in the dirt, "trims" Shane's trees, throws rocks into the "creek" (our fancy name for the water runoff after it rains), and finds all sorts of important Noah projects to keep himself busy.

The problem is that Noah does not understand the importance of staying hydrated on those really hot days. Around here, the routine is simple. Before he heads outside, he gets sunscreen, bug spray, and a glass of water. Those are the rules.

The other morning it was especially hot, and Noah told Shane he wanted to do "digging," which is Noah language for going outside. Shane got him covered in sunscreen, sprayed him with bug spray, and told him to drink one full glass of water.

Shane stepped out of the room for a minute. When he came back, Noah was proudly drinking exactly what he had been told to drink.

The only problem?

The "glass" Noah picked was an old shot glass from the cabinet.

That is when you realize Noah understands a whole lot more than he sometimes lets on. He knew exactly what Shane meant. He just found the smallest possible way to follow the instructions.

Technically, he was drinking a glass of water.
