Learning to Sleep Like Darth Vader
Noah Versus the CPAP Mask
Noah has never been a great sleeper. This summer, he completed his third or fourth sleep study. At this point, I have lost count. The latest study confirmed that he has moderate sleep apnea.
After several follow up appointments at KKI and the sleep clinic, Noah was fitted for a CPAP mask. Because he has sensory issues, we were encouraged to let him practice wearing the mask during the day before expecting him to sleep in it overnight.
At his appointment, Noah was not convinced that the mask was a good idea. His facial expressions made his opinion very clear. However, after practicing at home for about a week, he can now wear it for 30 minutes at a time.
He has also discovered that talking while wearing the mask makes him sound like Darth Vader. Naturally, he now attempts to carry on entire conversations while wearing it. We cannot understand most of what he is saying, but he is very entertained by himself.
The next step is receiving the CPAP machine and completing another sleep study so the air pressure can be adjusted for him. We are hopeful that better sleep will help Noah feel more rested, happier, and better able to manage his days.
For now, we are celebrating 30 minutes at a time and enjoying our conversations with Darth Vader.
If your child uses a CPAP machine, we would love to hear what helped make the adjustment easier. Please share this post with other families who may be beginning a similar journey.
