Noah at School vs. Noah at Home: Part 3
This is the third video in a three part series where Noah’s sisters portray how he acts at school versus how he acts at home. If you missed the first two posts and videos, you will want to go back and watch them. They complete the full picture of Noah’s very dramatic double life.
As I watch this video of Noah’s sisters pretending to be Noah at home versus Noah at school, I have to laugh. I know all kids behave better for others than for their parents. Noah takes this to an entirely new level. Ziva’s version of Noah at school matches everything I hear from teachers and support staff. Do not get me wrong. Once he gets comfortable he can have his moments, but most of the time he listens.
At home, Ilyia’s portrayal is spot on. He looks at you as if he does not understand a single word you have said, as if you are speaking a foreign language, when in reality he simply does not want to do it. Over the years I have learned many strategies for moments when stubbornness becomes a superpower, but even these do not always work with Noah.
I try First, then. For example, I say, Noah do you want Goldfish. He says yes. I say, first clean up your cars and then you can have Goldfish. Whether this works depends entirely on Noah’s mood. Sometimes it takes the threat of a consequence, like losing his cars, his iPad, his ice cream, or even a time out. And sometimes I try every option possible and nothing works. He will sit on the floor and stare at me like he has no idea why I am frustrated.
In the end, all I can do is laugh, learn, and keep trying.
